Little Ice Age (neoglacial) Paleoenvironmental Conditions at Siple Station, Antarctica

چکیده
The 550-year records of 6180 and dust concentrations from Siple Station, Antarctica suggest warmer and less dusty atmospheric conditions from 1600 to 1830 A.D. which encompasses much of the northern hemisphere Little Ice Age (LIA).· Dust and 6180 data from South Pole Station indicate that the opposite conditions (e.g. cooler and more dusty) were prevalent there during the LIA. Meteorological data from 1945-85 show that the LIA temperature opposition between Amundsen-Scott and Siple, inferred from 5180, is consistent with the present spatial distribution of surface temperature. There is some observational evidence suggesting that under present conditions stronger zonal westerlies produce a temperature pattern similar to that of the LIA. These regional differences demonstrate that a suite of spatially distributed, high resolution ice-core records will be necessary to characterize the LIA in Antarctica

Spatial and Temporal Characteristics of the Little Ice Age: The Antarctic Ice Core Record
Recently, ice core records from both hemispheres, in conjunction with other proxy records (e.g., tree rings, speleothems and corals), have shown that the Little Ice Age (LIA) was spatially extensive, extending to the Antarctic. This paper examines the temporal and spatial characteristics of the dust and 5180 infonnation from Antarctic ice cores. Substantial differences exist in the records. For...
متن کاملEvidence for Changes in Climate and Environment in 1816 as Recorded in Ice Cores from the Quelccaya Ice Cap , Peru , the Dunde Ice Cap , China and Siple Station , Antarctica
The climate and environmental records preserved in three ice cores from three quite different sites (the tropical Quelccaya Ice Cap , Peru , the subtropical Dunde Ice Cap , China, and the Antarctic Ice Sheet, Siple Station) are examined for the period 1808-21. Emphasis is placed upon identifying potential changes in climate following the eruption of Tambora in 1815. Ice cores provide a multifac...
متن کاملSpatial Patterns in Mass Balance of the Siple Coast and Amundsen Sea Sectors, West Antarctica
Local rates of change in ice-sheet thickness were calculated at 15 sites in West Antarctica using the submergence velocity technique. This method entails a comparison of the vertical velocity of the ice sheet, measured using repeat global positioning system surveys of markers, and local long-term rates of snow accumulation obtained using firn-core stratigraphy. Any significant difference betwee...
متن کاملMethyl chloride in a deep ice core from Siple Dome, Antarctica
[1] Methyl chloride (CH3Cl) is a naturally occurring ozone-depleting substance and a significant component of the atmospheric chlorine burden. In this study CH3Cl was analyzed in air bubbles from the West Antarctic Siple Dome deep ice core with gas ages ranging from about 65 kyr BP to the Late Holocene. CH3Cl levels were below the modern Antarctic atmospheric level of 530 ppt in glacial ice (45...
